Small simple steps can be effective in curbing child obesity. The aim in treating child obesity is to slow down the rate of weight gain and gradually bring the child to his or her ideal weight. A diet diary can be used to study eating patterns and identify foods the child has a weakness for. The diet plan of the obese child can then be developed keeping these patterns in mind. Increase in physical activity is the first and foremost step towards treating obesity in a child. An addition of only 1000 steps per day to a child’s activity routine contributes significantly in reduction of body weight. Physical activity also reduces the chances of health related problems. Children should be encouraged to keep a ‘diet diary’ which is a record of all the food that they consume. Obesity can have an immediate negative impact on a child. During treatment of child obesity a cap should be put on the child’s TV time. The obese child should not be allowed to see TV for more than an hour a day. It is necessary to ensure that the child does not eat while watching the TV. Child obesity often also called childhood obesity is the phenomenon of obesity in children and young adults. An obese child is often the butt of jokes in the playground. While treating child obesity it is important to provide the child with positive reinforcement. Do teach the child how to turn negative remarks into positive statements to help keep up his self esteem. Small changes will work in the treatment of child obesity. The parents and the child must not expect miracles from the treatment. Changes which come about gradually will also be more sustainable.
